Announcement : 10th March 2007

Dear Players,

As you would have noticed by now there has been some changes made to Chess On The Web over the weekend. The most important of these changes is the addition of the Forums. The Forums are being provided to allow players to communicate with each other and with the administration of the web site. The forums will be moderated and any posts that are deemed to be unsuitable will be removed. Guidelines on how the forums will be moderated will be provided soon.

Now that the majority of the development on the forums are out the way we will be focusing on the tournaments. The touranments is the piece of work that I've been looking forward to completing for some time now and it should be ready within the next few months.

I know there are lots of little enhancements that need to be made to the site. I will use the forums to communicate the progress of these changes. Please feel free to make suggestions on changes you would like.

Regards

Hello Stoney X,

So, you are the mad boffin behind all this! Everyone has seemed so reticent about getting involved in this interactive part of the site that I decided to bury my own natural reserve and at least say hello to your good self - and everybody else.

One thing I should like you to keep us posted about is the already mooted further development of the "timeout " system, some aspects of which I know have caused irritation on the part of many participants. Of course "teething problems" are inevitable in a project of this complexity, so I am not complaining - just helping to draw attention to an area which could be ( and perhaps has been ) the locus of some sharp practice. I am aware that this matter - as well as its specific details - is already known about in your admin. department.

In general, I must congratulate you on a very good - and potentially great - site. It is such a relief after sampling a mass of aesthetically shoddy and operationally incomprehensible rubbish. So, keep up the good work, and best of luck.....Cheers.....Tony Brown

Tony Brown,

Thanks for the response. It has been a bit quiet in here since I installed the changes. I was hoping to be able to send a message to everyone to announce that the forums are now available. If all goes well I'll get to do that this evening.

The issue with some players playing the timeout game is known. As the timeout system in intergral to the tournaments, no changes will be made until after that development is complete. I'll keep everyone updated via this forum.

great site!!!

..It´s kind of addictive, i love it!.. you know stoney, in the tournaments, you should make like groups, based on de rating ofcourse, and shuld ask us 2 deposit 10$ or more to some account, and winner takes it all!  ok ok.. 80 or 90%... you can keep the rest.
what do you think?? I know this site is for fun... but when there´s money behin it...  it´s better!
lots of hugs from La Paz,Bolivia!

Gabor,

I do like your idea of me keeping 30 to 40% of the pot (I've got to think big) but that's not going to happen. Even if that was the direction I want this site to go it would probably fall foul of anti-gambling laws, so not something I even want to look into.

general site

Hi Stoney,
I am very grateful for the truly thorough site you have put together. All the additions and so called 'teething problems' are incidental.
All the very best from down under..................Chunga.

Welcome page

Hi Stoney,
You really did a great job! Don't forget to mention the forum-update on the welcome-page!
Regards,
Gian
P.S. You have really made a nasty last move in our current game. I wish that I have made that move.

Gian, thanks for the reminder.

P.S. I don't intentionally make nasty moves, but sometimes I get lucky :-)

Time Outs

Stoney,
I don't know how the system works now, but as a tournament player I know that a player must claim his timeout win when the flag falls in an over the board game.

This seems a decent idea to incorporate, rather than automatically awarding the game to the player not on the move who may be as asleep at the swith as the one who timed out.

I would add that I've noticed that players tend to time out instead of resigning (not here necessarily).   You might add that to your play guidelines.  It is widely considered to be rude to leave an opponent sitting at the board waiting for the flag to fall.  Manup and resign if you've lost.

Great work so far.

Another small detail is the offer of a draw.  It appears as a menu item when a player is on the move.  A draw is properly offered after a move is submitted.  On the move a player ought to have the option of "claiming a draw", by repetion, 50 move rule, etc.

Great work so far.
