I remember seeing that in GBOWR in the early 1970's

Fools mate is seen in lots of scholastic tournaments
1. e4...e5, 2. Bc4.....Nc3, 3.Qh5....Nf6??, 4. Qxf7#
even shorter is 1. e4....f6, 2.d4.....f5,3. Qh5#
A cute Caro Kann trap, I've sprung a few times is:
1. e4...c6, 2. d4......d5, 3.Nc3......dxe4, 4. Nxe4....Ne7, 5. Qe2?!......Ngf6??, Nd6#
The cited game actually takes another two moves, although obviously it is resignable.

No doubt the shortest is the one presented by redketchuplover, ande even shorter would be to propose a game and immediately retire.
But in a real board, I guess this is the shortest:
1.f3 e5
2.g4 Dh4++ known as the crazy checkmate (really, the insane´s checkmate)
