In other sports there are some parameters you can use as standards with which to judge; timing I running, goals in football, games won in tennis and so forth

What could we use in chess? I do not know. And have read little about a “best” player. Authors, I think, go by their “feelings”

Personally I would vote for Capablanca.  Parameter? His serenity, his complete comprehension of the game.

Interesting to see what other “chessontheweb” friends will say.
